🏥 Medical Information

At St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School, we are committed to keeping all children safe, healthy and supported throughout the school day.
💊 Administering Medication in School
Where possible, medication should be administered at home. However, we understand that this is not always practical.
If your child requires medication during the school day:
  • Medication must be brought to the school office by an adult
  • A parental consent form must be completed before medication can be given
  • All medication must:
    • Be clearly labelled with the child’s name
    • Include dosage and timing instructions
    • Be in its original packaging
  • We keep a written record of all medication administered
👉 Complete our online medication consent form here: (a paper copy is also available from the school office)

Staff receive appropriate training to support pupils safely, although administering medication is voluntary for staff members.
🧒 Supporting Medical Conditions
We support children with both short-term and long-term medical needs.
If your child has a medical condition, please inform the school as soon as possible. We may create an Individual Healthcare Plan (IHP) which will include:
  • Details of the condition
  • Medication and treatment required
  • What to do in an emergency
  • Any adjustments needed in school
These plans are created in partnership with parents and, where appropriate, healthcare professionals.
🤧 Allergies, Asthma & Medical Needs
It is essential that we are aware of any conditions such as:
  • Asthma
  • Food allergies
  • Diabetes
  • Epilepsy
For example:
  • Children with asthma should have a clearly labelled inhaler in school
  • Emergency medication (e.g. inhalers or auto-injectors) must be easily accessible
  • Staff are trained to respond to medical emergencies
🌡️ Illness and Absence

Please keep your child at home if they are unwell.

  • Sickness/diarrhoea: 48 hours after last episode
  • Fever: return when well
  • Follow NHS guidance for other illnesses

For mild symptoms such as headaches, toothache, coughs and colds, paracetamol is kept in school for children who may need it during the day. Consent through Arbor is required.

🧠 Mental Health & Wellbeing
At St Joseph’s, we recognise that a child’s mental health is just as important as their physical health.
We provide a supportive and nurturing environment where children feel safe, valued and listened to. Our staff are committed to promoting positive wellbeing and are available to support pupils who may be experiencing:
  • Worries or anxiety
  • Friendship difficulties
  • Changes at home
  • Emotional or behavioural concerns
We work closely with families and, where appropriate, external professionals to ensure the right support is in place.
If you have any concerns about your child’s wellbeing, please contact the school — we are here to help.
🚑 First Aid and Emergencies
We have trained first aiders available at all times.
  • Minor injuries will be treated in school
  • Parents/carers will be informed where appropriate
  • In an emergency:
    • Staff will follow school procedures
    • Emergency services will be called if required
    • A member of staff will remain with your child until you arrive
🚌 Educational Visits and Activities
Children with medical conditions are fully included in school trips, residential visits and sporting activities wherever possible.
Appropriate arrangements will be made to ensure medication and support are in place.
📞 Working in Partnership with Parents
Parents/carers play a vital role in supporting children’s medical needs.
We ask that you:
  • Provide up-to-date medical information
  • Inform us of any changes to your child’s condition
  • Ensure medication in school is in date
  • Complete all required consent forms (including the online form above)
We carry out regular data checks to ensure records remain accurate.
