What we've been up to this half term......

Sports Day - 6th July 2021

All the children took part in our sports day. There were many activities to take part in including a football ball balance, and a bean bag throw. The children all enjoyed the day and were very supportive of one another and cheered each other on.

As well as the individual winners of our running races last week.

Careers Week - 14th to 18th June 2021

Nursery had a special visit from a police officer. The children were very excited and asked lots of questions. The children got to hold a police baton and got to see at all the different items the officers have to have with them to do their job.

Super Hero Day 30th June 2021

The children all looked fantastic in their super hero costumes! In our phonics learning the children were great sounding out the letters and blending the super hero words.
After each superhero had their photo taken the children took part in drawing their favourite characters and writing who their had drawn. The children also enjoyed baking cakes throughout the day. Everyone had a great day.

French Day - 17th June 2021

Nursery enjoyed their day learning about Cameroon. The children danced to ‘Makossa’ a style of Cameroonian music,and learnt that the star on the flag and the red represents unity. The green represents the countries forests and the yellow represents the sun. The children loved saying ‘ Bonjour’ as well as looking at items from the country such as a calabash bowl.

What's Under Your Feet

What’s under your feet campaign 16th June 2021

The children looked at how many soil invertebrates are living beneath our feet. Certain bird species like the Starling are in decline, and completing the dig we are finding out what food is available for the birds to eat. The children found lots of worms and ants and a beetle.

CAFOD Eyes of the world campaign

The children watched a video on how important it is to look after our climate and how the changing climate affects the poorer countries in the world. The children designed their own eyes to show our world leaders the world is watching them, ensuring they make the right decisions to tackle the climate crisis.

World Oceans Day - 8th June 2021
Today the children listened to the story ‘Lost and Found’ a story about a little boy and a penguin and their growing friendship as they travel to the South Pole. We also looked at a map to see just how much of the ocean covers our planet. The children later coloured in pictures showing how important the ocean is and why we must look after it.

What We have been up to so far this half term.....

London History Day

Celebrating London week.

During London week the children looked where London was located on the map in comparison to Rossington. We spoke about the important landmarks such as Buckingham Palace and London Bridge, as well as it being the capital of England.
All the children then listened to the story Baggy Bear and the Royal Baby, afterwards the children made their own crowns.

Butterflies

Before half term the children watched the butterflies being released after having them in the class. The children loved watching the different stages of the caterpillars and were very excited to watch them turn into butterflies and fly off.

Mental Health Awareness Week - 10th to 16th May 2021

The children talked about how they felt if they were feeling a little bit nervous and how it made their bodies feel like butterflies in their tummies. However we also talked about how we can help both our body and mind by talking part in activities that make us feel happy. We love to dance in Nursery and this helps both are bodies and our minds.

Ascension Day Mass 13th May 2021
Today the children watched and joined in on the live stream from St Marie’s Cathedral Sheffield. They participated with the singing and the actions.

Earth Day 22nd April 2021

To celebrate Earth day the children listened to a short video on why it is so important that we look after the Earth and the places where we live. The children learnt why it is important not to drop litter, placing items such as plastic and paper in the special boxes we have in our homes.
To help celebrate, the children created their own Earth using blue and green paint hand prints to represent the water and land.

What we've been up to this half term.....

International Forest Day - 21st March 2021
To acknowledge this day the children during our Forest school session mixed mud with water to make mud paint.
They then took turns to paint the trunk and the branches to create 3 different pictures of trees.

St Joseph's Feast Day - Friday 19th March 2021

To celebrate this special occasion the children have been busy creating their own St Joseph models. We will be sending the figures home this Friday, and ask for £1 donation to help raise money towards the Good Shepherd appeal this year.

Science Week 8th-12th March 2021

During science week the children made predictions as to whether different items would float or sink. Once they made their prediction the children watched what happened to the item. They placed rocks, sticks, shells cork and polystyrene into the water. Afterwards the children were asked about a number of different items and if they were going to be soft or hard. The children all made their own predictions and were excited to see if their predictions were correct.

World Book Day 4th March 2021

Nursery children really enjoyed the days activities that featured around the book ‘ Stick Man.’ They made their very own ‘ Stick Man’ using a Milky Way bar and chocolate fingers. Later on that day the children participated in a maths and literacy activity. All the children looked wonderful in their costumes, and enjoyed celebrating dressing up as their favourite character.

Fair Trade Fortnight 22nd February- 7th March

Nursery found all about Fair Trade, and how we can help the farmers in countries around the world by buying items with the special logo on it. The children tried some Fair Trade hot chocolate as well as making Fair Trade banana bread.

Internet Safety Day 9th February.

The children listened to the story of ‘Detective Digiduck’ the aim of the story was to encourage the children to help them understand that not everything online may be true and that some games may not be age appropriate. Afterwards they all made their own Detective Duck.

Traditional Tales Workshop 27th January 2021

Yesterday the children enjoyed the day listening to the stories of The Three Little Pigs and the Gingerbread Man. The children created their own little pigs using tissue paper and lollipop sticks. There was even time for some baking. Everyone made the face of the Gingerbread Man and also got to decorate biscuits with pink icing and sweets to make their own little pig. The children enjoyed their busy but fun day.

Forest School Learning in Nursery

Forest School Week 13
Last week the children choose a leaf that had been collected earlier in the week. Each child then was given a small amount of clay to roll out in a ball, and was to flatten it down. Once they had a flat piece of clay the children placed their leaf on it to create an imprint onto the clay. It was messy work but everyone enjoyed the activity.

Forest School Week 12
The children collected different leaves from the school playground, once all the leaves were dry everyone had a turn to choose a colour to paint on their leaf. They then made a print from it on the white paper to create a colourful display.

Nursery Remembers

Before Christmas the children took time to reflect and remember all the men and women who have sacrificed their own life, so we can have a better one.

Switch off fortnight - 16th-28th November
The children learnt the importance of switching lights off at home and in school, and why we turn lights off when we are not in the room. The children coloured in a picture of a light switch to emphasise why we must do this.

December 2nd 2020

The children have taken part in making rainbow plates for Mercure Hotel in Doncaster as part of a project to create a rainbow themed Christmas tree decoration.

Anti-bullying week - 16th to 20th November 2020
Last week the children listened to the story ‘Is that what friends do’
Monkey and Elephant decide to be friends, but the path to a perfect friendship is sometimes bumpy, especially when one friend is just a little thoughtless to their friends feelings. Finally the friends discover what true friendship means and how to be kind to one another.

Remembrance Day - 11th November 2020
The children created their own poppies for our class display.

Interfaith Fortnight

Hinduism

During our Interfaith fortnight the children listened to the story of Diwali, and how the origins of the Diyva lamp started with the story of Rama and Sita.

The children made their own Diyva lamps out of clay and coloured in Rangoli patterns. Together we tasted some Burfi, a milk based sweet from the Indian subcontinent.

The children enjoyed watching how Hindu children prepared for the celebrations in their homes with special food, decorations and special clothes.

Remembrance Day

Nursery made their own poppies from sticks, wool and buttons to create our class display. This was to remember all those who have sacrificed their life for us.

Forest School Week 11

'Natural Paint Brushes'


The children made their very own natural paint brushes finding different sized sticks to make the handle. They then gathered grass, leaves and fern to create their paint brush.

Forest School Week 10

'Picture frames'
The children made their own picture frames from natural found objects. The children enjoyed drawing a picture using coloured chalk. Once completed they finished off their picture using stones, sticks and leaves to create a frame.

Forest School Week 9

'Leaf Crowns'

The children really enjoyed making their own leaf crowns. There were lots of leaves to find in the Nursery playground so the children collected them in a large box to dry before sticking them onto coloured card.

Forest School Week 8

‘Tree Rubbings’

The children this week went out to the large playground and looked at the different trees around it. We talked about the bark of the trees and how this felt to touch, the children said it was ‘hard’ and ‘bumpy’. The children then had a crayon or black chalk and rubbed this on the paper against the trees to create their own tree rubbing.

Forest School Week 7

This week to commemorate Remembrance Day the children made Poppies with wool and buttons. The children collected sticks from outside to have as the stem of the poppy.

Baking

Black History Month - October 2020

‘Handa’s Surprise’

Nursery listened to the story of ‘Handa’s Surprise’ together we spoke about any similarities or differences that we could see in the story and where Handa lived.

The children said the following:

“Our houses are made of bricks that’s made of wood and straw”

“They have no shoes we don’t go out without shoes on it would hurt”.

“Her skin is brown and her hair is black like lots of buns”

Harvest Fast Day   

On Thursday the 8th October the children in Nursery sent in donations of food items. The children learnt that the food they brought in will help other families around Doncaster. The children then listened to a story ‘What Wanda Wants’ Learning that it is important to have manners and to say ‘Please’ and ‘Thank you’. In the story Wanda never said this when asking for something, the children said that Wanda should say ‘Please can I have this’ and to say ‘Thank you’ afterwards.

Feast day of St Therese

On Thursday 1st October the Nursery learnt about the good work done by St Therese whose feast day is celebrated on 1st October.

The children found out that the work of St Therese teaches us to do the ordinary things of life with extraordinary love. A smile, a word of encouragement, helping each other at school and to share what they play with. The smallest action, done with love, is more important than great deeds done for personal glory.

The children learnt that she is known also as “The Little Flower of Jesus” or just “The Little Flower”.  To celebrate this day each child cut around their own flowers to create a floral display.

Forest School Learning in Nursery

Week 6:  ‘Leaf Threading’

 This week the children made bracelets and necklaces threading different sized leaves through a piece of string.

The children had to make a small hole in their leaf and carefully thread the leaves through. The Adults helped to tie the string together to create a bracelet and necklaces. 

Week 5: 'Leaf People'

The children this week have been making their own person out of leaves stones and sticks.

They glued the natural found objects onto Autumn coloured paper to create their own person.

 

Week 4: 'Bracelets'

The children this week decorated their own bracelets with natural found objects, as the leaves are starting to fall from the trees lots of the children put these on as well as sticks and some bird feathers.

Week 3:   ‘Clay Hedgehogs’

This week the children looked at photos of hedgehogs and talked about their features. The children then made our own hedgehogs out of clay, and used natural found objects to create their own individual hedgehogs using items such sticks and leaves. We all had fun making them.

Week 2: ‘Drawing Tree’

The children were asked what activity they liked to do outside. The children said activities such as playing football in the garden, going to the park and playing on their bikes. They were then to draw and represent this on a piece of paper and the drawing would then be laminated and hung from the tree in the Nursery playground for everyone to look at.

Week 1: Our first ever forest school session!

The children collected different natural found items from the outside area of Nursery. We found items including feathers, leaves, lavender and sticks. We then as a group spoke about the items we found, the children said the feathers had come from a bird and the sticks from trees. Once collected the children stuck them on a canvas to make a nature picture to put on our classroom wall.
