RE - Fire Fighter

Tuesday 10th March 2020

WALT: explore self-giving opportunities.

Our new RE unit is ‘Giving All’. Year 3 had a visit this afternoon from Luke and Jason, who are firefighters in Rossington! We discussed what impact their jobs have on society, the qualities needed to be a good firefighter and how their job is self-giving.

Luke and Jason kindly ask that we all remember to check our fire alarms on a   regular basis and have a plan if there ever was a fire in our house.

British Values – Individual Liberty & Mutual Respect

Tuesday 4th February 2020

WALT: understand what showing bravery means.

We firstly listened to the story ‘The Wolf’s Colourful Coat’.

We said that it is about being brave enough to do the right thing. This means that we always need to be kind to people, even if they are mean to us. We need to be brave enough to do the right thing and not let someone bully us into doing something we know is wrong.

We then listened to the song ‘This Is Me’ from The Greatest Showman.

We think the song is about…

  • Being brave to be me
  • Being proud to be myself
  • Knowing it is ok to have different likes, dislikes and beliefs
  • Not being afraid to be myself
  • Never giving up, even if we are scared
  • Having the confidence and bravery to stick at what we are doing even if it gets tough or difficult

We think that this fits in with the British Values ‘individual liberty’ and ‘mutual respect’.

  • Respecting our own beliefs, and the beliefs of others
  • Not copying anyone else – being a unique individual

After this, we said one thing we have done that was brave and something that we were proud of ourselves for.

Holocaust Memorial Day - Monday 27th January 2020

Year 3 held a two minutes silence to think about those that had died because of their religion in WW2. We spoke about how people should have their own individual liberty to chose their relgion and we should have tolerance of other faiths and mutual respect.

Year 3 Liturgy

Year 3 began their liturgy with the following reading:

“And Mary said, “My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my saviour, for he has looked with favour on the lowliness of his servant. Surely, from now on all generations will call me blessed; for the Mighty One has done great things for me, and holy is his name.”

We explained that we prepared for the coming of Jesus by thinking about Mary, the mother of Jesus, and the expectations placed on her by God. This reading reminded us that Mary always said yes to what God asked of her.

We then discussed the story of Mary. That God sent the angel Gabriel to Galilee with a message that she would have a baby boy and she would call him Jesus.

Following this, we lit the third advent candle and performed a liturgical dance.

Commando Joe Mission 4

I found it very hard to be quiet so that we didn't get found out.

Some of the groups did take it in turns and worked well as a team.

I used  will power and positivity as well as perseverance.

Yes, because we had to work in a team to get food for all of us.

Yes, because the harder we worked, the more food we got to eat. Which makes us stronger.

Interfaith fortnight – Judaism

During our two week Judaism focus, Y3 have explored where Jewish people pray and what they wear during prayer times and special occasions. The children watched a video which explained the many significant parts of a Jewish Synagogue. They then labelled a synagogue and wrote what the different parts represented. The children then looked at what Jewish people wear, and we mainly focused on the ‘Kippah.’ A skullcap worn by Jewish people to separate humans from God. This is also worn as a sign of respect. The children designed their own Kippah’s, adding symbols which meant something to them, or which symbolised the Jewish faith.

PSHE—Anti-bullying Week

Monday 18th November 2019

WALT: understand bullying and how to help someone who is being bullied.

For Remembrance Day in Year 3, we spoke about the importance and the significance of the poppy and Remembrance Day.

To show our understanding, we made acrostic poems using the word ‘remember’.

We created a class poppy to show us all coming together in our thoughts.

We sketched poppy fields after listening to ‘In Flanders Fields’.

Roman Armour Making Session With Parents - 22nd October

As part of our Ancient Rome topic, we have been looking at Roman armour and how we could make some of our own.
I'd like to invite you into school on Tuesday 22nd October at 2:30pm to help the children make their armour.
With this in mind, it would be brilliant if you could bring into school any unwanted cardboard or materials the children may like to use (tin foil, packaging, bottles etc).
I look forward to seeing you then!

Commando Joe Mission 2

The most important part of working as a team is being kind and

taking turns. We have to encourage our team mates to work together.

We also need to listen carefully to each other.

This would have helped Spartacus and his army to defeat the

Romans in battle because they would have worked together as a team to overcome challenges.

When we work together things are easier because we can help each other. We spoke about unity meaning working together and agreed it is showing a strength.

Commando Joe Launch

We had to stop our lessons today to complete an emergency mission!

We had to work as a class to follow a map to crack a code.

We snuck through school and followed our map. It led us to the Year 5/6 corridor.

Then, we had to find some letters! We took them to assembly along with the rest of the school.

When we put all of our letters together, they spelt:

Commando Joe’s

Black History Month

Miss Fiddler showed us a picture of Frederick Douglass and asked us who we thought he was.

Our predictions were not correct. We have learnt from this that we cannot judge people by what they look like.

We then learnt more about Frederick Douglass. We discovered that he was born into slavery in 1818 and escaped to New York to do some incredible things!

We think Frederick Douglass was a very clever and smart man as he taught himself to read and write. He is a very good person because he helped to allow slaves to become freed. He is a very brave man for escaping slavery. He stood up for other people’s rights. We think he was an amazing, kind man.
