Some action shots from our gymnastics sessions.

French Day - Thursday 17th June 2021

Year one thoroughly enjoyed learning about The Democratic Republic of the Congo

Eyes of the World Campaign

Year One enjoyed learning about “Eyes of the world”. They are now able to discuss how they would feel if they had to travel a long way for water or if their local area became flooded. They have great ideas about how we can help and support other people around the world, who may be in less fortunate circumstances than themselves.

This week, year 1 have found out all about climate change and how it is affecting our world. We discussed extreme weather, such as flooding, and how this makes it very difficult for farmers in poor countries to grow their crops.

Then we designed our Eyes of the World poster, so that our prime minister, Boris Johnson, knows that we have our ‘eyes’ on him during the very important meeting he is having about climate change.

Have a look at our designs…

Whats Under your Feet - Monday 14th June 2021

What’s under your feet?

There has been a decline in certain bird species and scientists are not entirely sure why. Y1 carried out a 30x30cm dig to investigate what soil invertebrates are beneath our feet. As you can see by their faces, they absolutely loved it! Sadly, we only found 1 beetle, 3 ants and 1 grub. Not much bird food in our field.  But, some amazing ideas and discussions from our intelligent group.

Butterfly's

We have 5 new additions to our class. We’re so happy they have successfully left their chrysalis and are drinking the sugary water to gain strength whilst their wings harden and dry.

London History Day - 31st May 2021

Year one enjoyed learning about London History Day before half term. We focused on Sir Steve Backshall and his MBE.

MUSIC
Yesterday we listened to the Muppet Movie song. We discussed how the song made us feel and what it helped us to imagine in our minds by closing our eyes. We then identified the beats with different movements – tapping our noses, clapping our hands and moving our bodies. Afterwards we sang the song and even made our own lyrics to the beat!

Mental Health Awareness Week - 10th to 16th May 2021

This week is mental health week. Year one have enjoyed reading the story of ‘The colour monster’. We designed our own monsters to show how we’re feeling. Some felt love, some felt happy, some felt sad and some felt mixed emotions!  We had an attempt at making stress squishes but they didn’t work out too well.

Virtual Mass at St. Marie’s Cathedral- 13th May

Year one enjoyed taking part in the virtual mass. Afterwards, we sat in a circle and had some reflection time where we lit a candle and said some prayers.

Year one wrote their Lenten promises on candles. During reflection time each day, they considered how they could achieve this promise, or what they could continue to do during the Lenten period to be closer to God.
International Day of Forests
We had a circle time to discuss why trees are important such as giving us clean air. We then linked this to our Africa topic, by looking at the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest in Uganda. We compared Rossington woods to the Bwindi Forest by highlighting the fact that it is the habitat to gorillas and has lots of rain!

Art

Science week
We had 8 clues to crack an eight-digit code set by Mrs Wallhead. We had to work out different problems that were based on our learning about materials. It was great fun!

BLACK HISTORY MONTH - October 2020

Year one have shared the achievements and bravery of Rosa Parks. We then discussed what is meant by diversity and representation. We learnt that the first Disney princesses were all European and only had white skin. We then discovered that Walt Disney later created characters that were better representative of our world, when he created Jasmine, Pocahontas and Mulan. Walt Disney has asked us to design a new princess of African or Caribbean decent. She is going to be a successful woman, who achieves many of her goals. Year one decided that she would be very kind and demonstrate kindness to others. She would try also hard at school which made her very clever.

Harvest Festival
Year one had some reflection time about what harvest festival means and who it helps. We sat in a circle and talked about our favourite food and how we would feel if we couldn't afford to buy it. We talked about how people may get into those circumstances and what we can do to help. Then, we said a thank you prayer to God for providing us with such lovely food and told him we were grateful. We made cards to thank God with some lovely drawings, take a look at the photographs! Some of us preferred to create a food collage! Year one are so very thoughtful and respectful which is so lovely to see.

Our Friday wellbeing session this week involved playdough. We loved it! We asked to have playdough in our class every Friday afternoon!

Saint Therese
Year one spent some time studying the wonderful St Therese, who is known as 'The little flower of Jesus'. We learnt about her life and how she wanted to enter the monastery from a young age. We discussed why she is known as the little flower and found out that it is because she believed in demonstrating kindness to all. For that reason, we painted flowers and thought of a kind thing to do for each flower that we painted. Our art work is displayed in our classroom to remind us to be show kindness.

Creative Dance - Friday 18th September

Year One enjoyed their creative dance lessons last week. They learnt a street dance and learnt how to count to the beats so that they knew which moves to do when! Some of us have even asked for extra dance lessons.

Cosmic Yoga - Friday 18th September

Our wellbeing time this week was based on Cosmic Yoga. Look at us practising our stretches in class. What a calming way to end the week.

Banana Splits

We have been learning about healthy eating and made a healthy banana split with Mrs Courtney. It was so yummy, we ate up all of the fruit and even asked Miss Goodwin if we could have some more the next day. YUM!

Commando Joe - Wednesday 16th September

We met Commando Joe, and won the prize for getting ourselves changed in a prompt manner. Commando Joe teddy bear took pride of place in our classroom for the week. We can't wait for more games and missions next Wednesday. Our missions will be linked to our 'Traditional Tales' topic.

Tai Chi - Tuesday 15th September

Tai Chi, what an experience! We learnt about the five animals in tai chi and all felt so relaxed and calm after our session with Ron. We have decided to practise more Tai Chi meditation in class. Some of us were able to feel our own energy in between our hands after the session.

Mindful Cycle - Monday 14th September

Year 1 thoroughly enjoyed their mental health cycle and scoot on Monday, as part of our wellbeing week. Thankfully the sun was shining and we had some shade to relax. Definitely a nice start to our week.

Wellbeing Walk - Friday 11th September

As part of our wellbeing time on Friday afternoon, we enjoyed a nature walk in Rossington woods. We looked for the faces that have been carved into the trees. We all collected some leaves and acorns and loved plodding along in our wellies! What a lovely way to end our week. We would recommend a visit if you haven't been yourself.

Roald Dahl Day - 11th September 2020

Wow! What fantastic costumes everyone wore to celebrate Roald Dahl day. We had lots of Mr Foxes, Matildas and Willy Wonkas! Our best dressed winner was 'James Trotter' and his giant peach! Can you tell which book we are from by looking at our photographs? In class we drew some pictures of Fantastic Mr Fox, as it is our current favourite book!
