Science Week

Design & Technology

For our design and technology lessons we have been given 'The three little pigs and the big bad challenge' by Miss Goodwin. We had a lovely walk around our school field looking at local houses for inspiration and collecting sticks to build our own piggy house!

World Book Day

Mrs Falero was our mystery reader dressed up as a butterfly! We read the very hungry Caterpillar and made some caterpillars on a leaf! We also wrote our own story with Mrs Dodsworth and designed our book cover for our favourite story.

Fair Trade Fortnight

Stay and Pray - Wednesday 26th February

Thank you to the families that joined us for our lovely Stay and Pray session. This week we focused on family and our family values. The children created some lovely art work pieces representing what their family means to them and the love that they share. We look forward to seeing you at the next one!

Teddy Bear's Picnic - Friday 14th February

Year 1's family were invited to join us for a teddy bears picnic. Children and grown ups were allowed to bring their favourite teddies in to school. We read books and enjoyed our picnic.

Safer Internet Day - 11th February 2020

After an assembly reminding us of ways to stay safe online, some of our children created posters promoting online awareness. Take a look at our designs!

Year 1 - Science

We were predicting which materials would float.

Commando Joe Missions

Each of our Comando Joe missions this half term have been based on a different traditional tale. The children have had to use their CoJoe skills to climb a magic beanstalk, help Goldilocks travel through the woods safely and find the best way to carry oats through an obstacle course! They have been great fun and the children have demonstrated fantastic teamwork and communication skills.

Children's Mental Health Week - 3rd to 9th February

British Values - Individual Liberty

Commando Joe's Mission 3

The children had to work as a team to complete the obstacle course, following a Jack and the beanstalk theme.

Art

Painting with vegetables

Our first laptop lesson!

Commando Joe - Friday 17th January 2020

Year 1 had to help little red riding hood find a safe way to cross the woods, to give grandma her food. They used benches as a bridge so that the wolf wouldn't eat them and pretended the balls were food that needed to reach grandma safely. They had great fun and worked really well as a team and demonstrated resilience if things went a little wrong!

What we have been up to so far......

Year 1 and Year 2 Nativity

British Values - Individual Liberty

This week we have been learning about individual liberty therefore talking about the choices that we can make for ourselves.

Lots of children talked about how they try hard to choose their own dinner rather than simply copying the meal that their friend chooses.

We read the book ‘The Hueys in the new jumper’ which is about people being the same and therefore not expressing their individuality. The children then created three different jumper designs for the Hueys and explained which jumper they would choose to wear and why.

There were some great designs!

Reptile Rendezvous and Furry Friends - Tuesday 19th November

The children took part in a range of activities including holding the animals and learning about what they eat and where they live. There were a range of animals such as skunks, snakes, spiders, lizards and meerkats. The children enjoyed holding the animals and reptiles and loved watching them roam freely around the class.

Anti-bullying week

Year one read the book ‘Something else’ and talked about how they feel knowing that someone is being left out. They said that they felt sad, mad, upset, and angry that people were being mean to ‘something else’. When he got a friend, they felt happy for him. Year one said that they would always help someone who is sad and let them be their friend.

Remembrance Day 2019

Year one looked at the importance of remembrance day and learnt about why we wear a poppy. We reflected and gave thanks to all the soldiers who lost their lives by creating a finger print poppy field. We painted it on clear laminate so that it can also be a beautiful sun catcher in our classroom and continue to remind us to give thanks. Not only did we practice our 2 minutes’ silence to remember those who lost their lives but we also looked at what surviving military men and women do during this time, such as marching to the cenotaph.

Here is our poppy field painting and some fantastic work that our year one made at home!

Trip to The Dome for Multi Skills

Commando Joe - Wednesday 6th November 2019

Mission 2

Aim: To work as a team to identify a safe passage through a river so that Nala can return to Pride Rock.

De-brief

Did you work well as a team?

Jan – “We worked well when people swam fast across the river but not when people were being selfish and waiting so that other team members could not get across in time”.

How could you have worked better as a team?

Emelia – “We could have worked better as a team by building things together like building a bridge.”

Jonah – “We could have worked better as a team if one person in the group distracted the hungry crocodiles so that the other team members could help Nala cross the river, then we wouldn’t all get eaten.”

What would have made it easier to cross the river?

Maja – “We should have built things like a wooden bridge”

Finley G – “We could have built a boat if we worked hard enough as a team. That would be a safe point for us.”

What we have been up to so far .......

Wednesday 16th October 2019 - Black History Month- Rosa Parks

British Values - Mutual Respect.

We carried out some role play to consider how it might feel to be left out for reasons that are out of our control. Miss Goodwin pretended to be a mean teacher and only let the children with blue eyes sit on the chairs, the brown eyed children had to sit on the floor. We said that this made us feel sad, angry and upset. Some people said they felt really worried about their friend’s feelings and wanted to ask them if they would like their chair to sit on. Then, we acted out getting on bus. If we were wearing a jumper, we had to sit near the front but if we didn’t have a jumper on we had to sit at the back unless the seats were full. We reflected again and decided that it was not fair and that we were being unkind. “I feel bad for them because they must have felt left out” Maisie.

We learnt about Rosa Parks and the acts she carried out in the 1950’s. We thought about how she must have felt and we said that she was amazing for standing up for herself – “she must have felt empowered” (Maria).

After this, we talked about having mutual respect for one another and how we can show mutual respect to everyone we meet. We thought of lots of great acts of kindness including offering someone your seat, holding the door for them or simply giving them a smile.

If we were to meet Rosa Parks, we would ask her;

Are you OK? – Sophie

Would you like to come to my house to be safe? – Jessica

How did you feel when the white people said you had to get off? Were you angry or upset? – Finley G

Would you like a drink? Because if it was hot in America and the bus kept driving past black people and she wasn’t allowed to sit down then she would be hot and tired so she might need a cold drink. – Patrick

We watched the video of 'Austin's butterfly' to consider how we could encourage a friend to improve their art work. We decided we could be kind, specific and helpful.

We had 12 children at the library on Tuesday morning which is fabulous!

British Values - Democracy

Year One library morning
